Teaching Source Evaluation to Undergraduate Nursing Students: Comparing the CRAAP Test and the Source + Beyond the Source Framework

Caitlin Ratcliffe

Abstract

Given the drawbacks of checklist approaches to source evaluation, this study compared
a networked method, the Source + Beyond the Source framework, with the
CRAAP Test in a one-shot library class for undergraduate nursing students. In one
pre-test and two post-tests, participants evaluated websites promoting misinformation
and disinformation, reliable consumer health websites, and peer-reviewed
articles. The results showed no significant differences between the groups, although
both groups improved following training. The open-ended responses indicated that
few participants retained specific details from either evaluation tool. These findings
highlight how the one-shot format limits the efficacy of academic librarians’
information literacy instruction.
